Project 2: Contextual Fit

Project Statement
Assignement

This project shows how an addition to a building needs to be in relation with the existing context. For this project I focused on on extruding the structure, circulation and the public and private space arrangement.

The Smith Family has commissioned you to design an addition to their house on the shore of Long Island Sound. The original house, designed in 1965 by architect Richard Meier, has been widely published and is internationally known. Unfortunately, the Owners needs have change since the original design, thereby warranting this architectural intervention. The Owner specifically request that the integrity of the original design be respected, yet the new addition should have its own presence.

Narrative

My client is a CEO of a of very profitable company. He travels a lot around the world for his business but he thinks is missing moments with his family. He would like an addition to his existing house, by adding a family room with outside space, an exercise room and a master bedroom. He would like the new family room to be a space where family can get together for very good moments. In addition, the family room should have a wide view on the shore. He would like his bedroom to be very private and not to bright. The exercise room should not be on the same floor has the bedroom. An outside space should be added to take advantage of the view and the outside space.
